Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hoodoo? How do I get started?
Hoodoo is a Black American religion that, according to Elder Mama Rue, "is the cultural lineage and blended traditions of the descendants of stolen Bakongo, Luba, Bambata, Igbo, Hausa, Fula, Fon, Ewe, Mandinka, Mende, Limba + who were born in the United States of America".
If you are a beginner to Hoodoo, we highly recommend Mama Rue's podcast Mama Rue's Ancestral Musings as well as: The Hoodoo Society, A Little Juju Podcast, The Hoodoo Book of Flowers, the Book of Negro Folklore and Mojo Workin': The Old African American Hoodoo System.
Who can purchase these tools?
Anyone can purchase the spiritual tools in our shop. Divination and mindfulness belong to everyone. And we highly encourage folks to educate themselves about others' experiences. Especially when those experiences and histories have been erased or suppressed. You may even be surprised to discover a great many shared spiritual concepts between different Indigenous religions.
Bear in mind, however: the tools we make and sell center Black people and Black spirits, so if you aren't Black some concepts might not immediately click. It's perfectly alright to find another tool specific to whatever spirits you have or traditions you practice.
Do I need to be Black to practice Hoodoo?
Hoodoo is a closed religious practice which requires that you be descended by blood from those Africans trafficked to the so-called United States of America. Hoodoo was created specifically for their liberation and survival. And, as ancestral veneration is among the core tenets of this work, without a personal link to Hoodoo ancestors there is no Hoodoo practice.
Isn't Lenormand European?
Lenormand is European, and like many things including the English language, it is done by Black people quite uniquely. Our Lenormand decks tell our stories Blackly, folding in our history and archives and ancestors to make something deeply personal and specific to us.
Furthermore, the ways in which these cards are read is more aligned with the divination systems practiced by African two-headed doctors than those of French mystics. That is why our customers find it relatively effortless to communicate with their Black ancestors and spirits using these decks.
You can learn more about reading with these cards in the beginning chapters of Grandma Baby's Black Gold Lenormand Too Guidebook, which is free to download in our shop.
Why is it called an Apothecary?
We call our shop a spiritual apothecary because we are expansive and Indigenous in what we consider spiritual medicine to be. Our tools may not heal you physically, but they assist in deepening one's connection to ancestors and oneself.
